Panic-Attack: My Masters Student About to hand in proposal..

Busy proof-reading my Masters student's proposal. Writing is one of the skills you really need to sharpen when you think about academia. Even a brilliant research idea written wrongly can be rejected - something I learned during my own Masters studies...

All the best,

Ishmael

SOC4H Potentials?

The sharing of health information among health service providers is a crucial business process that can improve on the quality of health service and also to capitalize on available limited healthcare infrastructure resources. Research into the Service Oriented Computing (SOC) paradigm makes mention of some of the potentials of SOC, particularly in the area of integration (collaborative distributed systems). One wonders, therefore, as to how can SOC be applied in health domain - more specifically, how has SOC (or SOA) been used in healthcare and what gains has it introduced? These are some of the interesting topics that one needs to follow very closely. Of course as a technologist, my main interest will be on "what is possible with the technology (SOC) for health application in particular".

Happy New Year - 2013!

As the lazy days draw to a close - we now need to keep focus to achieve the goals that we set ourselves.

Compliments of the new year 2013, and I hope you are sustained to achieve great things this year. I would add: that you should not aim to "finish" everything, as the number 3 is half-out, half-in, rather aim to get something started - a year for major shift (in and out)!

For me 2013 is about getting a PhD proposal accepted - marking the official start of my PhD journey. Motivated by my Cum Laude for my Masters Degree, I now believe much more strongly that I can do this!

All the best, keep the focus, keep the faith!

03 December 2012, I received a Masters Degree in Information Technoology (cum laude)

Today I received good news from my University (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University [NMMU]) that I have met the requirement for the degree Master of Technology (MTech) : Information Technology with effect from 03 December 2012. The qualification is awarded Cum Laude and will be conferred in April 2013.

I will be sharing a link to my Masters dissertation as soon as the university publishes it.

This is my Christmas present!

WebRTC and SIP...Experimentation underway...

I am currently hosting a visiting researcher in my office and we are exploring the potential of WebRTC and SIP interoperability. WebRTC is still draftly, but a number of milestones have already been reached in terms of standardizing the transport protocol as JSEP (JavaScript Session Establishment Protocol), for instance. Google Chrome  (Canary) supports the WebRTC API - I have played around with the flags (PeerConnection) and have tried making SIp Calls between browsers...very nice.

Still unsure of how to get started on the server side, but this should become clearer....I have Mobicents Sip Servlet (on Tomcat 7) running...now starting with a simple chat-server that proxies chats between two browsers (as SIP clients - thanks to WebRTC!) - I will then move into audio/video calls in the same manner...via SIP-Servlet-With-WebRTC.

Workshop on Mobile and Web Technologies in Social & Economic Development (February 27th 2012, New Delhi, India)

Ishmael is plugged in from the W3C Workshop - a pre-conference workshopn for the Mobile Technologies for Development (M4D) 2012, New Delhi, India:

The Workshop on Mobile and Web Technologies in Social and Economic Development aims to understand the challenges associated with using mobile phones and Web technologies to deliver sustainable services for underprivileged populations in developing countries.
People and organizations with interest in the role of mobile phones and the Web in social and economic development are invited to this parallel workshop under the aegis of 3rd International Conference on M4D - Mobile Communication for Development.
